The M4 CSL ducktail is a shape many G82 owners want. One detail is easy to miss: the real M4 CSL has a fully manual trunk, with no power trunk. A standard M4 has one. That difference shaped how this CSL style lid was developed, and it is what this article is about.
Starting from a genuine CSL lid
This lid started with a genuine part. The search for an M4 CSL owner went through Canada and the United States, and an owner lent a real trunk lid to be scanned 1:1. That scan is the basis for the shape.
Why a copy of the CSL lid was not enough
The CSL lid belongs to a manual trunk. To keep the power trunk on a standard M4, the design data had to be adjusted, fitted and adjusted again, across several versions.
That took time. An owner who wanted to order in August was asked to wait for this version. The lid was finished about a month before it went on the car, and the extra month went into this adjustment. It was fitted at the end of October 2026.
What it does on the car
The power trunk still closes at the press of the button, and the lid fits with almost nothing else to change.
The trade-off: about 1 mm near the tail lights
With the power trunk kept, the lid sits slightly higher than the original near the tail lights, by about 1 mm. We would rather tell you this here than have you find it after installation.
The reason is weight. This lid is around 5 kg (11 lb), nearly 10 kg (22 lb) lighter than the OEM lid. The weight of the OEM lid helps press that gap down, and a lid this light does not have that help.
If you want it tighter
There is a way to close that gap further: turn down the force of the power trunk and move the latch down. The lid then closes tighter and the gap gets smaller.
The catch is that your OEM latch has moved, and the gap will not be right if you refit the OEM lid later. The owner of this new car did not want to move anything on it, which is why the balance was found in the lid itself. This step is optional.
Panel gaps: what 1:1 means
A 1:1 shape does not mean seamless. The gaps on the original BMW lid are often wider than many owners expect, and this lid follows the original. The aim was gaps as close to the original as possible, not a perfectly tight fit. Like any trunk lid, it needs careful and patient alignment once mounted, and the result depends on the car and the installer.
Details to look at
The character lines on the lid are shaped to line up with the lines of the roof, with two raised lines running through the center and a ducktail that sits in proportion with the rear of the car.
Common questions
Do I lose the power trunk?
No. Keeping it was the point of the extra development.
Does anything on the car need to change?
Almost nothing. Professional installation is recommended, and adjusting the spring or the latch is optional.
Will it fit the G80 M3?
No. The M3 and M4 trunks are different shapes. We list a separate CSL style trunk lid for the G80 M3.
